Our chains are sold in three sizes, ranging from the narrowest to the widest: 3/32" (MTB 8 speed/single speed), 1/8" (single speed), 3/16" (Super wide BMX models). Each of these and all the sprockets we sell have the same link length, 1/2".
3/32" chains are compatible with all the derailleurs, single speed tensioners and sprockets we sell. As they are the narrower than other chains, they tend to be the lightest without sacrificing strength - the side plates which take load are identical, just the rollers and pins are a little shorter. This size of chain will fit a 6, 7, or 8 speed cassette but shifting performance is a little compromised.
1/8" chains are often used on singlespeed setups where weight is not an issue. They also allow a little 'float' on most sprockets which can help alleviate issues associated with a slightly offset chain line.
3/16" chains are very overbuilt but super strong. We find that they are overkill for most riders, but if you have lost confidence in 'standard' chains then these are well worth a go!
Due to the high demands trials riding places upon chains, we recommend changing them frequently to keep sprockets in good condition and to help prevent them from breaking. 2-3 months is not an unreasonable lifespan for a chain if you ride very often, considering their relatively low cost we think it's well worth ensuring your safety by replacing them regularly!
