Supplied as standard with a 420mm lever-to-splitter hose and a pair of 1600mm long hoses from splitter to calipers. Custom lengths are available too, up to a maximum length of 2500mm from the splitter to each caliper, and no limit on the splitter to lever. Just add the custom length charge to the basket along with the brake, and put the lengths you require in the notes field!
- One lever, two calipers!
- Unique brake system.
- A new twin brake system suitable for use on cargo bikes, electrically assisted bikes, specialist human powered vehicles, and multi wheel dog rigs.
- Single lever with twin caliper hydraulic disc brake system comprised of a Magura CMe ABS master cylinder, and a pair of Magura MT5 E-Stop 4-piston calipers.
- These brake calipers are the ones shown in the photos and designed to be used on the left-hand side of a wheel / hub. They will function perfectly well-fitted 'upside down' on the right-hand side, but you will need to modify your mounting bracket(s) and this is not something we can assist with. The fitment type is international standard Post Mount, with 74mm spacing between boltholes, and you can find more information about this with a Google search if required.
- The Magura CMe ABS lever is designed for commuting and cargo bikes with a robust alloy construction, and axial master cylinder for a sleeker look and stiffer design. The CMe lever is available in left hand or right hand options.
- The CMe ABS lever uses a larger 12mm bore piston, allowing it to operate two calipers simultaneously, with the added benefit of an 'open' design expansion fluid reservoir, containing a large diaphragm to better handle higher temperatures in the braking system. Our standard twin brake system, using an HS33 lever, is a 'closed' system, with no fluid expansion reservoir in the lever, which means it is not suitable for high speed applications.
- 'Open' system uses an expansion reservoir which allows fluid levels to self adjust according to increases in heat and pad wear. This means the brake 'self adjusts' as the pads wear, like a standard single caliper brake.
- Large '3 finger' lever gives huge leverage and high braking power, even when used with one finger! An engineered 'weak point' in the lever blade allows it to bend or break in a crash, saving the main master cylinder from damage. A design feature borrowed from the motorbike world. Replacement levers are available separately, please get in touch if you need one!
- Magura MT5 E-Stop calipers provide plenty of stopping power, and come supplied as standard with 8.S Sport brake pads for good all round performance and longevity.
- Assembled with standard Magura disc brake hose, which is more flexible than rim brake hose, making routing easier, and helps to manage heat generated in the system during use.
- A Magura Hose Splitter allows installation of the twin hoses to the calipers.
- This system means that both front and rear brakes can be applied simultaneously via one lever.
- Supplied as a fully bled, ready to bolt on system (including pads) - disc brake rotors and adaptors sold separately.
Important: we recommend using a minimum rotor size of 180mm, this will help prevent system over heating, especially on heavier bikes and human powered vehicles.
- Optional 'closer' switch is available for the CMe lever and can be retro fitted to a mount underneath the master cylinder body. This switch 'closes' an electrical contact when the lever is pulled, ideal for operating rear brake lights.
- Suitable for human-powered bicycles / tricycles, and electrically assisted pedal cycles / tricycles with a maximum speed of 15.5mph / 25km/h. Not suitable for solely electric powered vehicles or anything higher than the speed specified above.
- Maximum total train weight (total of vehicle, rider, cargo, etc) of any vehicle fitted with this brake system: 150kg.
- Weight: Approx 530g
We have made a disc brake guidance and information sheet which will be very useful if you are not experienced with disc brakes (or even if you are!). We strongly recommend having a look over it before fitting your new brake. This can be downloaded here.
How does this brake work?
This system works because the ratio of the CMe piston area is larger than a standard disc brake lever. The increased leverage of the large '3 finger' lever blade and the stiffness of the alloy body eliminate flex in the lever body, ensuring the pulling action of the lever is directly translated into the master piston. If you fit two calipers to the original MT5 (or any regular disc brake) lever, this reduces the amount of brake pad travel, and increases the amount of 'flex' at the lever. So, you cannot use a Magura Splitter with two 'normal' disc brakes.
Most disc brake levers have a 10mm piston diameter, so the area of this is around 78mm^2, and the Magura CMe lever is a 12mm piston, giving a piston area of 113mm^2 which is approximately 1.44 x bigger in piston surface area. This provides increased fluid flow from lever to caliper, and when the extra leverage of the large lever blade is factored in, along with the stiffness of the lever body, this results in suitable power and lever feel characteristics. The lever feel of the CMe is slightly 'softer' than the HS33 system, but still provides ample stopping power and feel, with the added benefit of the 'open' fluid expansion reservoir to help prevent over heating.
Despite the increased capacity for heat management, we still cannot recommend this brake where speeds will be higher than 20mph, or be subjected to multiple continuous brake applications over 15 seconds in length. There is a possibility the system will be overwhelmed by high temperatures, despite the expansion reservoir helping to prevent this. In a scenario where the brake overheats, the brake may begin to 'fade' and lever feel will become increasingly 'soft' in feel, leading eventually to inadequate stopping power or brake failure.
The brake is supplied pre-bled by us, but if you do need to bleed the system in future, there are two ways to do this. One is to bleed from one caliper, up the hose, through the lever, down the next hose and out of the second caliper. Alternatively it is possible to bleed the calipers & lines separately, then bleed the lever itself, and attach the three parts together.
