It can also lessen tread deformation, making the tyre more stable. Removing material from shoulder tread can help tyres 'hook' onto sharp edges, improving tyre 'hold' by allowing edges of an obstacle to sit more easily in-between uncut tread.
- For mountain bike riders, tyres can be modified to lower rolling resistance from the centre tread while retaining shoulder tread for cornering grip. Ideal for lowering rolling resistance on rear tyres.

I was able to customize my Der Kaiser tyre by cutting away every other shoulder block with this tool, and it didn't take that long either. You won't need this tool if you only use trials brand tyres, but if you prefer MTB tyres, this is definitely worth getting. Certainly better than trying to use a Stanley knife and soapy water.
